Raising Pigs At Home - 6 Essential Factors To Prepare Beforehand

When it comes to raising pigs at home, there are a few essentials things to prepare beforehand. While knowledge about raising them is the most important thing, setting up where they would stay comes in second. Itís a bit trickier to setup a pigpen at home than to set it up at a farm site, but that doesnít mean that itís impossible to do so.

Essential Factors to Start Raising Pigs at Home

1. Wide Enough Property

Setting up pigpens will require quite a wide space, because the pigpens should be safely under a small house of some sort. This is to provide ventilation so that the hogs wonít feel uncomfortable and grow unhealthy. Moreover, pigs dislike tightly packed spaces; in other words, pigs cannot be raised well when the pen is not roomy even if they can fit in it.

2. Sturdy Pigpen

When itís about raising pigs at home, it is more likely that their pigpen will be constructed by the homeowner by himself. Fortunately, itís not that hard to build a proper one as long as a few reminders are kept in mind. After buying the materials needed Ė which are hog wire and fences Ė then it can all be setup easily. To ensure a sturdy fence, they should be placed deep enough in the ground. About six-inches deep is enough. After that, just setup the hog wire then voila, itís done.

3. Keep a Supply of Hay

Raising pigs at home will need some space to keep a supply of hay. Hay is an important material for pigs to stay healthy and happy. Pigs are nesting animals, which mean that they need hay to keep themselves warm during cold seasons. Mud, on the other hand, keeps them cool during hot seasons.

4. Have an Exercise Area

While pigs are quite happy in spacious pigpens, they need to be let out and roam every now and then. Consider this part as their time for exercising. Take note to watch over them carefully when theyíre let out and to limit their time, because they will start destroying random things around when they are let out too long. Not to mention that they might injure themselves in the process.

5. Cleaning and Feeding

Cleaning and feeding should be done regularly. Itís better to do this at the same time, because it can keep the pigs busy and provide sufficient time to clean their pen easier. Incidentally, a homemade trough is quite easy to make which can make feeding the pigs a whole lot easier.

6. Setup a Waste Bin

Have an area to place a waste bin to amass their solid wastes there. Itís difficult and unsanitary to keep their wastes just scattered around. Donít forget to make sure the bin has a lid to have a control over its moisture that compromises the nutrients during composting.

Thatís basically it. All a pig needs are listed here, and a spacious enough home, along with proper care, will be able to accommodate and produce fine pigs suitable for slaughter or breeding. Raising pigs at home doesnít seem that hard anymore, doesnít it?
