Feeding Piglets - 6 Tips For Your Piglets To Grow Up Big And Strong

Feeding piglets is something farmers must learn how to do if they want their livestock to grow up big and strong. The appetite of a pig is consistently strong that even a piglet can eat as much as the amount of meal a regular human being can eat in an hour. Pigs, like humans, are also omnivores, which means it doesn’t matter if you feed them meat or plants. It goes without saying that these animals need to have a balanced diet so that they’ll be ready for the slaughterhouse in as early as five months.

Here are some tips you need to consider when it comes to feeding piglets.

1. The diet should consist of foods that are rich in energy, fiber, protein, and vitamins. It is important that you supply them with the right amount of these nutrients. Be prepared to spend huge amounts of money just to get their diet right. After all, most farmers would agree that food is the largest expenditure when it comes to raising a pig.

2. Piglets also need their consistent supply of clean drinking water. Not only that, they also need water so that they’d be able to wash their faces with it. Yes, the thought of pigs cleaning up after themselves might sound absurd, but it is already proven that providing pigs a basin full of water is a must.

3. Before you start feeding piglets, you might want to try experimenting by making your own feeds. Of course, never attempt this if you do not have the right amount of knowledge in food-processing.

4. If you don’t want to risk your piglet’s life by making its own food, you have no other choice but to purchase commercial feeds. You need to store these in a container that won’t easily be destroyed by weather condition or worse, rodents. Furthermore, never ever forget to check the expiration dates of the feeds that you buy to minimize the risk of food poisoning.

5. There are two ways to feed a pig.

a. First is the restricted method, which involves feeding piglets only until their appetites are satisfied. The main advantage of this method is that you get to save lots of money on feeds without endangering the health of your pig. The disadvantage, on the other hand, is that you get a lower chance of getting a pic with a high market price due to its weight.

b. The second is the ad libitum method, which involves feeding piglets without any restrictions whatsoever. The good thing about this is that your pig gets bigger and bigger each day; hence, you’re actually increasing its market value. The disadvantage is that it can get a bit difficult to control any digestive problems that might arise due to excessive feeding.

Keep the above tips in mind when you are about to start feeding piglets. The secret to becoming a successful pig farmer is to make sure that your livestock gets the right amount of foods per day.
